A tummy time mat is a tummy time mat is a tummy time mat, right? At least I used to think that way before I have gotten the opportunity to try out enough products to understand the little nuances that make certain products superior. If you are asking ‘What is a tummy time mat?’ I imagine you haven’t had a child in the last twenty-odd years. Basically it’s a mat for children to strengthen their muscles and learn to hold up their heads now that back sleeping has become an important factor in deterring SIDS. The differences in these mats can be quite amazing; like when I used to get my food at a dollar store (my staple in college and my young twenties) and can now (sometimes) buy at Whole Foods. If you want a souped up version of a tummy time mat, this is it. We take our tummy time here very seriously. My first daughter was a preemie and needed to build up her motor skills. My second daughter, and current infant, was a gestational diabetes child who had trouble gaining weight (go figure) and as soon as we got clearance from her pediatrician, we started tummy time right away (around two weeks of age). One thing I have learned is that our girls are determined. They grunt and sigh and WANT to lift their heads and roll over. In fact, Brie just decided to roll over the other day with the help of a tummy mat pillow. Quite impressive when you think about how much energy it takes for a newborn to muster up to even move an inch. It’s quite a proud feeling as a parent to see. So why ‘go gaga’ for this new Infantino product? I think I need to start a new paragraph for that one.
Go Gaga! Tummy Time Play Mat! is the latest soft activity gym from the already impressive selection of tummy time mats from Infantino. We had their twist and fold activity play mat with Brooke and loved it. Basically you can easily twist the mat to move it easily to take it with you on the go. I’ve yet to see this feature with other companies and I definitely love this option. Go Gaga also features a wind up musical mobile while is always fascinating for babies and is a nice touch to a tummy time mat. While many tummy time mats come with hanging developmental toys like mirrors and teethers, Go Gaga has wooden teethers (love!) and many different fabric textures. It’s made from polyester so it wipes up easily and is wrinkle free. The only downside I can see is that it doesn’t come with one of those curved tummy time pillows I have grown to love but luckily I already had one handy. You can use a rolled up blanket which is just as effective. All in all this is an exceptional product and the twist and go feature and musical mobile sets this product apart from other tummy time mats on the market.
