One of my best friends (and hair stylist extraordinaire) here in Austin is from South Korea.  She came here as an early adult and still has a very soft accent.  She is one of the most generous thoughtful people I have ever met and I love to hear her stories of her home country.  For example, her grandfather named her and it can take weeks for the family to have a child’s name until the grandfather gets to know them.  Her name is Yun which means ‘lotus flower’ which signifies beauty as well as a potential future occupation.  She believes it is no accident she spends her life trying to make other beautiful and I think that is just lovely.  I also love when she writes in Korean because it is such a foreign language to me (Western languages pale in comparison to how difficult it is for me to understand Asian languages!) and I wanted a way to show Brooke how written characters work in that side of the world.
