Dick and Jane Educational Snacks – States and Capitals (Pre-K+)

Education in Every Bite

Gestational diabetes is not just a temporary disease that affects me, it affects my whole family.  While we were eating mostly healthy items, it is easy to see now how we could cut back on carbohydrates and sugars as a unit.  To be honest, in the beginning, I told my husband to not change what he and my daughter were eating.  I did not think it was fair to them, but his insistence actually helped me out a lot, so it was actually the best thing for us.  We have learned to adjust together although they can have a few different side dishes and treats at times that don’t drive me totally crazy (cravings for tater tots and fried chicken are no joke, but I have been good!).  I have embraced lettuce as a wrap and lactose-free milk as part of my ‘snacks’.  It is actually amazing how much sugar is packed into foods and it does feel good to have healthier snacks around for our daughter.  As you can imagine, we (well, okay, mostly our ‘chef’, Bob) spend a lot of time in grocery stores looking at labels now at either Whole Foods or Central Market here in Austin.  This is how we stumbled across Dick & Jane Educational Snacks.

The Dick and Jane Educational Snacks are all natural and whole grain snack cookies in three different educational categories; States & Capitals, Presidents and English & Spanish.  For example, the States & Capitals snacks have the state designed in each cookie with the state, state acronym and capital (name and location) stamped into the front.  This is a husband and wife endeavor (yes, those are their real names!) with Dick being the baker and Jane being a teacher.  In a serving size (six snack cookies), there are just 18g total carbohydrates which includes 5g of sugar and 2g protein.  The vanilla snacks are 100% Nut Free (Dick has a nut allergy) and is certified kosher.  They get rave reviews on taste from both my husband and daughter, Brooke (Bob said it was a light buttery, vanilla taste.  Yum!).  Brooke wanted me to keep finding the Texas and Ohio cookies, which was cool.  We even got out her USA magnetic puzzle of the states to show her matches during snack time!  Being an Ohioan originally, I suppose I can look past Dick and Jane’s Michigan roots to say I love their concept and execution to have healthier snacks for kids.
