I am a little bit of a safety freak. I think it really started when I did an internship for college at a county’s Emergency Management Agency before, during and after Y2K. I realized how unprepared ‘we’ felt if something did happen in the entire county and it was with a great sigh of relief when Y2K was not a big deal – at all. The handful of us that were ‘on watch’ for the county felt that weight lift from our hearts and realized there was not going to be a computer meltdown as predicted. However, I finished my final report on our county’s preparedness statistics in the event of a disaster like Y2K and it was scary. Most people do not prepare for even small emergencies and seem to have an idea that having a ‘buffer’ in life is more for ‘the paranoid’ or those with who feel it is too expensive to be prepared. However, you can feel and be prepared in simple and not so expensive ways and the Red Cross and FEMA websites have great kits or suggestions for families who want to be prepared. Luckily, for me, my husband is an ex-Medic and knows the importance of having something as simple as a mini first aid kit as a must-have carry item on-the-go with a child, but he is also all about efficiency.
