An Adventure on the Silk Road

I love when a little history is thrown into our children’s books and this is a great story about a family taking China’s Silk Road on a yearlong trek and exchanging their wares.  The Silk Road, you may ask?  Yes, the Silk Road is a 4,000 mile stretch of road in China named after the important silk trade that started during the Han Dynasty (which began in 206 BC).  One famous explorer who took this trail was the famous Marco Polo who took the trail 800 years ago going from Italy to China.  Marco documented his journey, which took several years, which is a wonderful record of its existence.  The trail exists in quite a modern form today and only for over a year has Chongqing been officially linked to Duisburg, Germany by a freight rail across Eurasia.  Wow!

We’re Riding on a Caravan is a look at the ancient trek silk traders would take across China.  Although very few caravans would make the entire trek along the complete trail in China, we are lucky to tag along with this family and learn about six cities from the trail: Xi’an, Lanzhou, Dunhuang, Hami, Turpan and Kashgar.  The back of the book has some great sections on the history of silk, the history of the Silk Trail and more information on each of the six cities visited.  I love that there is also a two-page map of the trail that I could share.  This is a fun book with a unique rhyming scheme (with almost a song-like chorus on the bottom of the pages) and with the history of the Silk Road thrown in this is a great pick!
