Product Review: Mommy, Daddy, I Had a Bad Dream! [Library Binding]
A Book About Why Children Have Bad Dreams and How Parents Can Help Them Understand Them and Go Back to Sleep
I saw this book and immediately said I had to have it! This is a children’s book about nightmares and parents will get many tips and tricks on how to handle these nightmare situations (no pun intended) with their kids. I relate as being a childhood insomniac on top of having sleep issues that included nightmares that kept me from feeling well rested until early adulthood. This book was a nice eye-opener for me. Many of my childhood dreams focused on being in situations where I lacked control (my reoccurring one involved having to drive an out-of-control car backwards down the curvy side of the mountain where we lived that contained no guardrails). In the logical sense that this book prescribes, parents can help their child with their nightmare by asking them to trace these feelings to situations and real life circumstances that may be causing a specific nightmare. This tip is used so that the child feels in control of the situation and will be able to handle the actual problems head-on and be able to discuss more in depth during daylight hours to help this unconscious worry from cropping up in dreams.
Mommy, Daddy, I Had a Bad Dream! is about a normally, happy bouncing little kangaroo named Joey who is having a series of bad dreams that is keeping him and his parents awake at night. The lovely thing about this book is that Joey’s parents don’t tell him to not worry or to go back to bed, they actually entertain the empowerment concept with their child that dreams are created from our everyday lives and that we do have the power to control them by tackling issues that bother us in our lives. What a great teaching moment! I find this book meaningful for the entire family. As Joey’s parents help him realize why he may be feeling a certain way (in this case upset) in his dreams it helped him understand why he put those thoughts into his mind. Once a child can do that, they can learn to take charge of their thoughts and feel empowered to know that a good night’s sleep is within reach. Sleep tight, little sleep eyes!
