Father’s Day is coming up on June 17 and it will be a very special event in our household since my husband is the primary care giver and stay-at-home dad to our daughter, Brooke.  It was Bob who was holding and caring for Brooke as I sadly kissed them goodbye as I returned to work when Brooke was just six weeks old because I had to get paid.  Brooke was a preemie so when I returned to work that first day, her adjusted age was actually two weeks old and her NICU stint for having underdeveloped lungs was such a recent, painful memory that the only way I could bring myself to get in to my car to force myself to drive to work (to a new position, I might add) was knowing Bob would be at home taking care of her.  My husband and I have been through many events and years together, including a layoff that put his career on a still-hiatus, when he eventually found work as a grossly over-qualified and underpaid assistant manager in the same company who had laid him off years earlier.  Since Human Resources decided to consider him a ‘new hire’ from his break in service from the layoff, they refused to give him additional paternity leave to care for our family when Brooke was born early (although they knew we had no immediate family in Texas to help and could have made an exception).  It was that deciding factor of being in that bind and putting family over work that made both of us come to the huge decision to have him become a stay at home dad.  I can’t say we both weren’t nervous, but it was the right choice, even though financially difficult, for us.  Brooke’s amazing development is in part due to her dad’s constant care and concern about her well-being.  My husband has been known for many things in his life – Army medic, manager and strategist in a Fortune 500 company, and BBQ master, to name a few – but his role as an active and compassionate dad in our daughter’s life is his most prized title.  I want to honor all fathers out there, especially those stay at home dads, who do their best to care for and raise their child because you are as important as a mother in being an example of a role model and provider to our kids and this mother is very grateful.

The16-page paperback Celebrating Father’s Day book is the perfect short read for early-fluency readers about Father’s Day!  The setting for the book is a classroom where the assignment is for the young children to make a Father’s Day card.  This book not only talks about why children celebrate and honor the fathers in their lives, it also includes children who may not have a father and how they can celebrate the day with an important male role-model to them.  Each child in the class creates a special Father’s Day card for their special person and says why they want to honor them.  One boy’s example is, “I’m making a card for my step-father.  He coaches my soccer team”.  It is a wonderful read for a father (or father-figure) and young child to read together.  Two fun activities for Father’s Day is included in the back of the book that include creating a paternal family tree and measuring your dad’s hug. Very sweet.  I hope your upcoming Father’s Day is fantastic, Bob!  I may be biased, but I think you are the best dad in the world!
