Product Review: A Heart Pumping Adventure {Hardcover} (Geared towards Ages 6-10)
An Imaginative Journey through the Circulatory System
The Human Body Detectives is an award winning children’s book series by Dr. Heather Manley that follows two children, Merrin and Pearl, through their adventures in the different systems inside the human body to solve health mysteries. The intent behind this series is to inspire our kids to be proactive in taking care of their bodies and health. Dr. Heather developed these books to give a fresh approach to children on learning about the human body. She felt that her children’s classroom studies on the different systems in the body were not giving sufficient basic background information for building a solid knowledge foundation and set out to develop her own. As a mother who has heart disease in my family, I was particularly interested in reviewing the book of Merrin and Pearl’s adventure through the circulatory system.
A Heart Pumping Adventure is a fantastic children’s book with lots of full color pictures of Merrin and Pearl’s exploration through our body’s circulatory system and the importance of keeping it healthy. It is a great way to teach kids about caring for their bodies and it is packed with great information on how to be proactive in their personal wellness. There is a lot of fun things about this book, such as a picture of a (anatomically correct) heart instead of the word ‘heart’ throughout the text. I absolutely love all the wonderful reference pages at the back of the book where kids can learn more about the circulatory system. I was really pleased with the section on healthy eating and exercise tips as well as a glossary, tips of how to take your pulse and a diagram of the heart. Dr. Heather even incorporates fun and silly jokes for kids in a section called ‘Laugh Your Heart Out’. The other two books in the series on the Digestive and Immune System are available through eBooks and iPhone/iPad apps and Dr. Heather is working on creating the apps for A Heart Pumping Adventure. For additional learning, there is an elementary curriculum foreach book in the series available through the Human Body Detectives website.
About Author, Dr. Heather Manley: Mother to two daughters, Canadian-born Dr. Heather Manley is a practicing physician who lives in Hawaii and received her medical degree in 2001 from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon.
