You Can Create the Life You Want

We own a million dollar cat.  At least, we call him our million dollar cat.  Our rescue cat’s surgeries, vet stays and emergency visits have probably cost our family a small fortune in our modest budget.  He came into this world an unwanted cat left in a rubber-banded shoebox in an apartment dumpster in the hot TX summer which has affected his stress levels and kidneys.  We were lucky enough to be able to bring him in to our family.  It breaks my heart to even write his story but I feel it is important to tell my readers that Spike is worth every penny of his doctor bills.  I won’t say I wasn’t nervous when we had to go in to debt to get him a drastic but necessary surgery given his repeated complications back in 2007 when he was spending back-to-back weeks at our veterinary clinic, but Bob and I wanted to do everything we could to help him and we do not regret it.  He is the sweetest, most gentle cat who has let Brooke pet him and play with him since she started to reach out for his spiky, fluffy fur.  Brooke and Spike have become the best of friends and he is always there when she needs her ‘Pike’.  Our rescue cat’s story inspired me to look for and find the incredible children’s book about a rescue dog, Shoot for the Moon: Lessons on Life from a Dog Named Rudy.

Shoot for the Moon is inspired by the real life story of Rudy, a cream-and-white mutt who was an abused and neglected shelter dog who found a loving home with friend and owner, Corrine.  A true diamond in the “ruff”, Rudy started out his doggy life down on his luck and became the inspirational muse behind the successful and creative works of his owner.  With a little love and support, Rudy proves that you can truly rise above your past hardships and live your life to the fullest.  This inspirational book is great for children, especially those little animal lovers out there.  It is filled with little gems of wisdom to inspire children that it is not our circumstances that give us value or define us; it is how we react to those circumstances that show our true character.  Shoot for the Moon, kids!

About the Author:  Corinne Humphrey is truly a kindred spirit and has amazed me with her outlook on life and her charity efforts.  She was an International Flight Attendant for 25 years and has had such interesting careers as a Board Member for Arts-Kids after-school youth program, illustrator, motivational speaker and, of course, author.  Corinne donates a painting and 10% of her net proceeds from the sale of all her paintings, prints, t-shirts, books and other products to Friends of Animals Utah to support their amazing animal rescue efforts.  Check out her fun and inspirational blog, The Tao of Rudy (original namesake of this book when it was first self-published in 2007), for your ‘essential DOGma for your everyday joy’!

    • Thanks so much for commenting, DanIrene! He must be a fantastically spoiled dog who deserves every homemade meal. Thanks for sharing and making me smile. Here’s to our million dollar pets!

      • He is rotten to the core. We got him after he was rescued by the Humane Society and so he deserves to be spoiled after the horrible treatment he got when young. We have had him almost ten years. That is his picture on the right side of my blog. 🙂
