Paddington Goes to Town (Hardcover)

Paddington has warmed the hearts of generations of readers with his earnest good intentions and humorous misadventures.

I love Paddington Bear. Well, I used to love Paddington Bear. See, I thought I knew everything about him until I started an earlier review. Then I was like, ‘wait, what? He’s from England, right? No?’ OK, so then I thought I needed to research (which I obviously did) and – I decided I loved Paddington Bear even more. I mean, he’s been around for over 50 years, there is something in Paddington that makes us love him. And, I want to share with you some of the reasons why:

  • Paddington is an ADVENTURER! He left from Darkest Peru to immigrate to England with nothing but a suitcase and of course that darn marmalade.
  • Paddington breaks the law! To kids, this is exciting! To us adults, not so much, but hey, it’s a kid’s book. Not only is Paddington an illegal stowaway not to mention owning nothing but a suitcase he has to rely on the kindness of others (or his own wits) to make it.
  • Paddington wants someone to take care of him! Kids relate to that. They see Paddington Bear as a child who needs a family. It’s adorable. And that sign around his neck reading, “PLEASE LOOK AFTER THIS BEAR. THANK YOU.” So cute to kiddos. Yup.

So, there you have it! My very tongue-in-cheek synopsis of our love of Paddington. A criminal illegal immigrant who needs help. No wonder we love him so! *sly wink*

Now to the review of Paddington Goes to Town:

Paddington doesn’t intentionally turn his friend’s wedding into an uproar by getting the wedding ring stuck on his paw. Nor does he plan for Mr. Curry to slip on his marmalade sandwich in the middle of an important golf shot. But these sorts of things and more just happen when Paddington goes to town.

First published in 1968, Paddington Goes to Town is the eighth novel chronicling the adventures of Michael Bond’s beloved classic character, Paddington Bear.  This newly repackaged paper-over-board edition contains the original text by Michael Bond and illustrations by Peggy Fortnum.
