Penelope Perfect: A Tale of Perfectionism Gone Wild (Paperback) by Shannon Anderson (Author),
We publish books and learning tools that support young people’s social-emotional health and their educational needs.
“I’d never been late for anything. I just knew this would be a bad day.” When Penelope oversleeps, her daily routine gets thrown for a loop. From wearing mismatched socks to receiving her first-ever “B,” will “Penelope Perfect” survive this imperfect day?
Have you ever heard of Old Faithful? Well, that geyser has nothin‘ on me!
As silly as it sounds to my adult ears, I remain a reformed perfectionist. I’m not perfect at not being a perfectionist (which sounds as equally silly), but did you know that perfectionism usually stems from a form of anxiety. It’s an anxiety of failure, of being laughed at, and of not being considered good enough or even ‘the best’ at something. Not all children experience it, but when they do, it can be overwhelming and hard to overcome. It can cause immense frustration and even cause bright children to ‘give up’ or avoid situations where they think they can’t be perfect. In short, it’s not a great position to be in for anyone! So what can you do as a parent to help your child?
Penelope Perfect: A Tale of Perfectionism Gone Wild is an encouraging story told in cheerful rhyme that will speak to kids who deal with perfectionism or other forms of anxiety. The book has many wonderful tips and information to help parents, teachers, counselors, and other adults foster dialogue with children about overcoming perfectionism and coping when things don’t go according to plan. Life is always unpredictable and it’s important for children (and adults) to roll with the punches and sometimes that behavior has to be corrected. I love how the book isn’t condescending to children or adults and is really a great help for families who want to help their children BREATHE and RELAX and realize that life always has bumps in the road and it’s not the circumstances that can throw you for a loop, it is how you handle them with grace and resilience. It’s a great lesson for those of all ages, even those *ahem* adults who still struggle with perfectionism. Two thumbs up!
