Andrew & Polly – “Odds & Ends” – Sweet & Quirky Music for Kids
Release: 25 September 2015
If you and your family have watched Nickelodeon’s Wallykazam!, you probably already know and love the music of L.A.-based composer/performers Andrew & Polly. The team also write music for the Nick digital series Welcome To The Wayne and soon fans will get to hear more from the release of their second second album of playful pop tunes for kids, appropriately titled Odds & Ends.
The married couple and parents of one, Andrew Barkan and Polly Hall are in demand for their music for films, TV, and commercials, but their true love is creating and performing music for children. They aren’t aspiring rock stars, they are children’s musicians who want to play in small venues for families. They like to sing and interact directly with children and allow them to stretch their imaginations through the experience of music.
Odds & Ends is quirky and eclectic with fun, happy and sometimes nonsensical tunes. Parents will get to experience such familiar tunes as Bob Dylan’s timeless folk anthem, “Forever Young,” is covered as is the 1984’s “Ghostbusters,” theme song. However, in Andrew and Polly fashion, the Ghostbusters song is complete with theramin, marimba, accordion, kazoos, whistles, synthesizers, and the voices of a collection of their youthful fans bellowing, “Who you gonna call?”. Love it! My personal favorite is a cover of George Harrison’s “Here Comes the Sun” with beautiful harmonies and whistling. It’s adorable.
Amazingly, with the exception of the banjo and trombone, Andrew & Polly play every single instrument on Odds & Ends! That includes guitars, ukuleles, bass, accordions, violins, glockenspiels, salt shakers, whistles, synthesizers, beats, Rhodes, mellotrons, harmonicas, and even a cowbell. Yes, a COWBELL. This incredible album is a mixture of original songs and popular covers all with a quirky twist. You can hear how well this couple works together and has since their days as undergrads at Amherst college. Give your ears a delight and check out Andrew & Polly’s latest album and they will leave you wanting more.
About Andrew & Polly: The duo have been making music together since they met as college undergraduates. They share a love for the energy and genius of The Muppets, the heartfelt wisdom of Joe Raposo’s vintage Sesame Street songs, the elegant songwriting and wit of American Songbook creators like Frank Loesser, Rodgers and Hart, and Irving Berlin, the irreverent humor and track production of Flight of the Conchords, the joy-filled voices of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, the sweet and warm sounds of groundbreaking collaborations like Simon & Garfunkel and Les Paul & Mary Ford, the intricate textures and effective orchestrations of Alexandre Desplat and Mark Mothersbaugh, and the thoughtfulness and pretty much everything of Free to Be … You and Me. They are a DIY, mom-and-pop team, making music in their little studio in Santa Monica — not only their albums, but also songs and scores for children’s television, advertising, and independent film. Most important of all, they are a family and proud parents of their one-year-old son, Izzy.
