50th Anniversary Limited Edition Lava Lamps

50 Years of nothing but coolness. Lava Lite produces Lava® Lamps & other novelty lighting.

Hello 2015!  Welcome to 1965.  Lava lamps hold a special place in my heart.  My great-grandma Dove’s house was the ‘cool’ spot for me to go to when I was young.  She lived on a farm in central/SE Ohio, which was awesome in itself, but her house and decor was straight up GROOVY.  My brother and I were fascinated by her wave motion machine and her red lava lamp.  As soon as we would visit, we would turn them on and just stare at them for what seemed like hours.  That coupled with my mom’s hippie-ness gave me a passion for all things tapestry, vinyl, and egg-shaped chairs.  I may have been born a decade later, but my house definitely has a 60s flair.

What’s a lava lamp?

Watch the different-sized formations of melted wax collide, flow, and split apart as they ooze their way up and down the glass globe  A lava lamp is a decorative novelty item that was created in the 1960s and made with blobs of colored wax inside a glass vessel that is filled with liquid.  The light from the lamp heated up the wax so that the wax rises and falls as its density changes due to heating underneath the vessel.  The look of the wax is similar to that of pāhoehoe lava, which is how it gets its name.

The lava lamp was created in 1963 by a British accountant named Edward Craven-Walker who came up with the idea after watching a homemade egg timer made out of a cocktail shaker filled with liquids bubbling on a stove top at a pub.   Craven-Walker created a U.S. patent for this display device and he dubbed his lamps the “Astro”.  It was at a Brussels trade show in 1965 where an entrepreneur named Adolph Wertheimer saw it and he and his business partner, William M. Rubinstein, bought the U.S. rights to manufacture and sell it as the “Lava Lite”.  The lava lamp became wildly successful and is one of the defining relics of 1960s psychedelia.  Over the last five decades the Lava Lamp has been featured in countless TV shows, movies, magazines, newspapers, and websites.

Did you know that 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the lava lamp?  Lava Lite (the Original lava lamp) has been making these lamps for 50 years and has special limited edition lava lamps available for sale.  This is a special limited time edition lamps, so get them while they last.  When I checked out the lamps, I was floored that the 16.3″ lamp looked exactly like my great-grandma Dove’s lamp.  The yellow wax with the purple liquid in each lamp gives the heated wax a red color that I remember so vividly from my childhood.  The main difference is that each lamp is embossed with a “50th anniversary” classic gold base.  The soft light, 40 watt bulb (included with each lamp) gives off a relaxing glow and the lamp includes the electrical plug with a power switch located on the base that I remember from my youth.

Lava Lite’s limited edition 50th anniversary lava lamps are a collector’s item and come with a Certificate of Authenticity with each lamp.  You can purchase lamps as small as 14.5″ to one called THE GRANDE that is over 2 feet tall.  Wow!  This makes a wonderful gift for those baby boomer parents, Gen X-ers who remember the lamps from their childhood, or for kiddos, like mine, who have a fascination watching the heated wax bubble up and down in the lamp vessel.  This popular interior decoration has never been out of vogue in 50 years, and Lava Lite is making sure it’s around for many more decades to light up and fascinate new generations to come.  Love.
