Let Us Carry Your Worries So You Don’t Have To.
I have come to fully believe that you can’t work through a problem without being able to first define it. You reach a solutions (or solutions) by working through the details and if you are not sure what goal you are working towards, it is difficult to understand what the issue is in the first place. I was in middle school when a friend gave me something call Worry Dolls (muñecas quitapenas) from Guatemala. The small group of tiny people that came in their own pouch are well-known in that country and many people believe in the psychological benefits they give to children to release worry. I even read that parents will usually remove the dolls at night to reinforce that the worries ‘are gone’ during sleep. I love that!
Worry Eaters Dolls can be purchased in the USA through the Haywire Group and they are designed to give your child a way to define their fears in order to overcome them. How? By writing them down and ‘sharing’ with the doll. Each doll has a zippered mouth where your child can place their written or drawn fears to give to their Worry Eaters. It is a thoughtful way to approach a child who is worrying and gives parents a great opportunity to talk through issues while still being able to say, “That worry has been eaten, you don’t need to dwell on it”. As psychologists like to remind those with anxiety, it is not very healthy or good to ruminate. Worry Eaters Dolls give children a visual that their worries can be separate from themselves and it is always best to reflect on solutions to your problems when the time is right. Here’s to a good night without worries!
