Based on 30 years of research producing a hypoallergenic soap-free product line.

OK, friends, I learned something today thanks to this very review on Sebamed Sensitive Skin Care!  Their claim is that their skin care products are formulated to a pH balance of 5.5.  And I thought; is that a good thing?  pH balances are known to me from science class and looking at acidic levels, but on the skin?  I had no clue if that was a good thing.  Turns out, a pH balance if 5.5 is exactly the magical number that your skin needs to be nourished.  Who knew?  So before I start my review, here’s the little lesson in skin care science that I just learned.

Your skin has a barrier that is called the acid mantle.  It does things like keeping in lipids and moisture but also blocks the gunk like germs, pollution, toxins, and bacteria.  SO – for that reason, your skin should have a slightly acidic acid mantle and the perfect balance just so happens to be 5.5.  That’s because if it is too alkaline, your skin becomes all sensitive and dry and you can experience eczema.  So when products claim to be gentle on the skin; they should be, but not TOO gentle to not inhibit your skin’s ability to ward off those nasty enzymes that destroy collagen aka wrinkles and sagging.  So, there you go!

Now, why am I talking all about this pH 5.5 balance business?  Because in all my reviews on skin care products, I never once read that pH balance claim.  Sure, I’m sure its out there, but I didn’t know why.  And now that I know WHY I was extremely interested in Sebamed baby skin care products not only for my little girls, but for my own sensitive, dry (pH balanced-challenged?) skin.  So – here we go!

Sebamed Baby Cream (extra soft) pH 5.5

Without getting too scientific, which is beyond my capabilities, the Sebamed Baby Cream has intensive protection of a baby’s delicate skin since it has a water-in-rich emulsion with 42% lipids that form a moisturizing film over the skin without interfering with that metabolic process I discussed earlier.  Whew.  Basically, this means that the skin is protected from drying out and making it soft and smooth, you know, because of that pH 5.5 goodness.  It has the lovely scent from the herbal extract camomile which does more than just smell nice, it also soothes irritated skin.  Bonus for babies:  that prevents diaper rash!  Wowsa.  The cream also has vitamin E and I think we all know how that helps protect us from harmful environmental influences.  The cream smells great, it isn’t greasy and absorbs easily.  Oh, and a little tip, when the weather is particularly cold, make sure to put more of the cream concentration on the baby’s face and hands.

Sebamed Baby Bubble Bath pH 5.5

I tend to not start using bubble bath on babies until they are at an age when they can sit up on their own.  It’s from my own personal readings I’ve done (too much, I’m sure) about how it can irritate kids.  However, that said, if my kids were under the age of six months I’d definitely test out the Sebamed Baby Bubble Bath.  It’s a no tears formula made for delicate skin of all ages.  It has the same pH 5.5 extra mild tenside complex that cleanses gently without drying baby’s tender skin. It also smells heavenly!  The herbal extracts include medicinal plants fennel, yarrow melissa, and mistletoe which soothe and protect the skin against irritation. It also has the same camomile extract as in the baby cream to counteract inflammation.
All products are free of colorants, nitro-mochus compounds, formaldehyde, nitrosamines and dioxan. So no scary stuff.
Well, I learned something today and I hope you did, too.  Check out those pH balances on your own skin care products because they may just be causing that dry and itching skin we all want to eliminate.
