Spunky New Album from Award Winning Kindie Duo Play Date “We All Shine”
Album is available for purchase on July 24, 2015.
It is a funny thing, this ‘getting older’ business and I have a special place in my heart for punk musicians turned kindie family rockers. I suppose it is because when I was in high school, I had a few garage rock bands and the only shows where we could play around SE Ohio and NW West Virginia seemed to be with punk bands. I knew a LOT of punk bands and we all got along swimmingly. I’d be lying if I didn’t say that punk music absolutely influenced me. I actually thought at the time that punk bands had the sweetest members – you know, under all that spiky hair, collars and minimalist tee-shirts and such. I now know a lot of former punk members who have families and its great to see them incorporating that love of music with their children while not losing all the edge of youth. Sure, we may be getting older, but that doesn’t mean we want to just listen to The Wiggles or what have you. We still like to rock out!
If you hung around the kiddie stages at some of the hottest music events of the year (Austin City Limits, Treefort Music Fest, Lollapalooza) or went straight for the all-kindie music scene at Yo Gabba Gabba Live or Kindiecomm, you probably saw and heard the band, Play Date. I’m excited to report that this husband and wife duo are releasing their second album entitled, We All Shine, at the end of July. That’s right! Get your dancing shoes on and get ready to groove to some spunky tunes with your kids.
If you grew up in the 90s or are a punk (or closet punk) fan, you probably already know half the members of Play Date. Greg Attonito (from The Bouncing Souls fan) and his wife, singer/songwriter Shanti Wintergate, take punk into the children’s music genre with flair and ease. Don’t think this is a repeat of “Neurotic” songs, the music is quite uplifting and sweet while still maintaining a slightly heavier edge than you would normally hear from kindie rockers. Sure, there are pop and dancehall influences heard in We All Shine, but there are definite rumblings of garage rock to win all of those Fugazi-loving mom and pops out there. Guests on We All Shine include former Bouncing Souls drummer Michael McDermott, underground hip hop artist P.O.S, and legendary jazz musician Brian Auger. I always cheer when I hear kid’s songs that have great guitar effects pedals and this album is filled with them. Our favorites on the album are Ruin Your Appetite (definitely punk-y) and We All Shine (totally not punk, but awesome.)
