Oh, oh, oh
Let’s go fly a kite
Up to the highest height
Let’s go fly a kite
And send it soaring
Up through the atmosphere
Up where the air is clear
Oh, let’s go fly a kite (Walt Disney’s Mary Poppins)
Every time I think about kite flying, my brain likes to sound check the song “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” by Mary Poppins. The song is sung at the very end of the movie when father, George Banks, realizes that his family is more important than his job. He mends a kite for his son (a metaphor for mending their broken relationship) and goes outside to kite-fly. I have probably seen this movie at least 20-30 times, and it is one of my favorite scenes. Kite flying is a fun and enjoyable experience meant to be shared with others and Mary Poppins and the family in which she nannies use kite flying as a way to get close and fix their issues together as a family.
There is an art form to kite flying and there are many different types of kites with some being easier for children to fly. One of the main differences in modern kites is the use of struts. Struts are essentially kite mounts, the frames that are built in to kites. Nowadays it is not unusual to see no struts in kites, which makes the kite lighter and easier to travel. Premier Designs has a kite called the Parafoil 2, which is a no strut-kite that is perfect for beginning kite-flyers or children who are learning to fly them. At dimensions of just 13 x 21 inches of nylon fabric (with 300 ft. of test line and winder), the Parafoil 2 kite can easily fit in your pocket and it is simple to get into the air.
Premier Kites has a wonderful variety of kite designs, which is important to kids and Brooke loves the Rainbow Parafoil design. The name Parafoil comes from the word “para” since the kite lifts like a parachute and “foil” comes from the air pockets that fill up to give it an aerofoil shape. This kite is simple to launch (the more wind, the easier it is to fly and maintain) and it looks amazing in the air. A big tip I learned was that while the kite comes with string, it’s a good idea to purchase a handle, or more specifically, a nice hand crank reel to control the kite. Other than that, the Parafoils are completely reliable, unbreakable, and require no assembly so it is an easy and fool-proof design.
