Bob Ross T-Shirt: Just Happy Accidents
Welcome to The Joy of Painting
“Just go out and make friends with a tree. Isn’t nothing wrong, if you’re an artist, you’re allowed to do weird and crazy things.”
Growing up in SE Ohio, we had three stations that we could pick up on television. One was PBS and Bob Ross was a fixture on my set from my earliest memories of watching the ‘boob tube’. His gentle calming voice and lovely nature paintings were fun and breathtaking. It certainly helped that his easy demure and hilarious commentary were soothing to me as a child and a great escape as a teenager. In fact, it was because of Bob Ross that I started to paint with oils and made my first really nice ‘happy little clouds’ while watching and mimicking his work on “The Joy of Painting”. It comes as no surprise that Bob Ross Inc. continues to put out Bob Ross materials although it has been twenty years since his death. Amazing that his legacy lives on just like his art.
Robert Norman “Bob” Ross (October 29, 1942 – July 4, 1995) was an American painter, art instructor, and television host from Florida. He was best known as the creator and host of The Joy of Painting, a television program that aired on PBS in the United States, Canada, and Europe. What you might not know is that Bob was also a military Veteran who served in the United States Air Force where he became interested in painting while stationed in Alaska. Although we are familiar with Bob as a man of a kind and gentle demeanor, he claims that in the military that he was a screamer as he was promoted to the rank of First Sargent. He swore that after he left the military he ‘would never scream again’ and as far as I could hear, he never spoke above a whisper.
The Joy of Painting series is still available on DVD through BobRoss.com as well as books, art supplies and this really cool “Just Happy Accidents” tee-shirt. His wet-on-wet oil painting technique worked so well for someone like me, who may not have a high amount of *ahem* patience. His happiness oozed from his pours and to see him on scene again is really wonderful. I like nice reminders and I certainly missed Bob saying at the end of almost every episode, “We don’t make mistakes; we just have happy accidents.” His patience and encouragement spoke volumes to me even though he was only talking in a whisper and I have already tried to incorporate his style when working with my daughters on art projects.
The Joy of Painting’s final episode aired on May 17, 1994 and Bob died at the tender age of 52 on July 4, 1995.
