Beatles Baby! CD by Caspar Babypants (All Ages)
Chris Ballew Covers The Beatles! Drops September 15, 2015!
Nope! I know what you are thinking. This is not a repeat music review post. This is, in fact, a brand new The Beatles cover album by kindie musician extraordinare, Chris Ballew, AKA Caspar Babypants that comes out in September. You may remember my review back in July 2013 about Chris’s first Beatles cover album Baby Beatles! and I’m happy to report he is back with an all new selection of The Beatles songs that are just as shiny and poppy as the first.
I’ve written extensively about my huge love of The Beatles that still has never waned in all these years and how I basically wore out my first (and second) cassette tape of Sgt. Pepper when I was a tween after the public library decided I had checked out their copy one too many times. Ha! I was so enamored by The Beatles songs and their lyrics that I got my hands on a copy of a 1969 The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics book (both volumes) at a yard sale when I was in seventh grade and I memorized every single song. EVERY. SINGLE. SONG. I was on a mission to understand every word and I succeeded. Then I started learning how to play their songs on guitar and the love continued on and on and on……and is still clearly and prominently showcased in my vinyl collection.
Cover, volume 1 (1969). Love this collection of lyrics!
I wrote at the time of Chris’s first album that I was hesitant to hear Caspar Babypants (who I LOVE) cover The Beatles, but after listening (which is now about a hundred times since with our family), it has grown to be one of our favorite kid’s albums. If anyone was going to be its biggest critic it would be me, and……I…love…it. I really, really do. You have to go into the album not as a Beatles album but as a fun kid tribute and definitely with a cartoonish flair. It’s happy, it’s uplifting, quite upbeat and it has some great songs sprinkled across many Beatles albums. While no one can match the Lennon/McCartney duo of songwriting (and I was also a secret fan of George Harrison the best) Caspar Babypants did a great job of filling some big shoes and fashioning them into his own unique pair. I certainly wouldn’t be brave enough to try this task and he smartly tries to make songs a little faster and brighter for kids who like to boogie and groove. I mean, if a person can make “The Fool On The Hill” sound cheerful they have quite a talent! While I certainly don’t need to talk in depth about The Beatles songs that haven’t been said before, our personal favorite covers are “Hello Goodbye”, “Good Day Sunshine”, “Sgt. Pepper’s ..” and a lovely cover of “Rain”. Guest vocals by Rachel Flotard and Jen Wood are magnificent. Beatles Baby-Baby Part III, anyone? I’m game!
