As I’m sure you know by now, if you follow my blog at all, I am a huge fan of HarperCollins Children’s books! Their lasting characters have made a huge impression on my kids and Brooke has been a huge fan of books like Pete the Cat and Pinkalicious for years. I love that HarperCollins books come out just in time for a new season and this upcoming late summer is very important to us. That is when Brooke officially starts kindergarten. While she has been going to preschool and all that, kindergarten is different. Not only that, she will be going to a private school and wearing uniforms, which is quite a change for all of us. Brooke is preparing for this change and so are we. It is perfect that HarperCollins has new children’s books that talk about the first day of school to make this upcoming ‘big deal’ relevant in our readings and discussions. I think we’re ready!

Pinkalicious decides to get school lunch for the first time, but has she bitten off more than she can chew? One of Brooke’s favorite characters, Pinkalicious, is back again and this time it’s all about school. School LUNCH, that is….. I am sure that Brooke will soon have her favorite and not-so-favorite school lunches from her new school soon enough and I got a chance to talk to her about how her meal card will work when she gets the school lunch. Panda Kindergarten (On Sale 6/23/2015) – now in paperback! $6.57
This book was fun to read to an almost-kindergartener! Re-released for the first time in paperback, Panda Kindergarten is a day in the life of the panda cubs at China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda at the Wolong Nature Preserve in China. When panda cubs are born they are raised together in a protected setting—dubbed panda kindergarten—where they grow strong and learn skills that will help prepare them to be released into the wild when they are older. This book not only tied in with Brooke’s 5th birthday party at the Austin Zoo, we were also able to talk about how other species prepare themselves to become ‘adults’.
Chu’s First Day of School Board Book (On Sale 6/23/2015) $7.19
The panda bear with the great big sneeze is coming back in the re-released Chu’s First Day of School but for the first time as a board book. It is a great story about the panda being nervous about starting school and being worried people might laugh at him for his sneezes. Will everyone be nice to him? Will his teacher like him? This universal experience of starting school is a wonderful read for a child beginning a new school experience and Chu is able to calm his fears when he realizes everything at school is going to be just fine.

If your child gets excited about lift-the-flap books, check out this exciting new Berenstain Bear book about Brother and Sister Bear getting ready for school! The busy and exciting morning reminds me of getting my children ready and out the door in the mornings and reading about the bear cubs needing help finding their backpack and pencils so that they can catch the bus in time is a very realistic morning for our family.
