Costumes and More since 1954!
Cleopatra is synonymous with Ancient Egypt, so when we chose Ancient Egypt as Brie’s birthday country this year (a tradition in our household), it was only fitting that our costumes would center around her. Sure, Ancient Egypt is a wonderful place to explore and is known for many other juicy topics like the pyramids, hieroglyphics, ancient numbers and mummies – but Cleopatra is one topic you should not miss! I’d be shocked if you said you didn’t know Cleopatra, but just in case, here is a quick background:
Cleopatra VII Philopator was the last active pharaoh of Ancient Egypt and was considered to be a great beauty. Her relations and offspring with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony are almost like a Greek tragedy that could have been written. It is said that she committed suicide by having a cobra bite her after Octavian (Caesar’s legal heir) defeated Cleopatra and Mark Antony had committed suicide. Yeah, heavy stuff! It’s no wonder that the Western world is still obsessing about her history that is more like a soap opera.
Anytime Costumes has a fun Cleopatra Costume for Women (and we have a child’s version for Brooke, too!) that I love. It has been fun to get dressed up like Cleopatra and talk about all things Ancient Egypt. In fact, there are many accounts as to what Cleopatra wore and looked like from damaged busts, coins and even portraits of her so it is not too far from history. Head-dresses, wigs, jewelry and clothing in both Egyptian and Greek-style were common for her likeness. The legendary Queen of the Nile has been fun to explore with the kids and is great to discuss Ancient Egypt fashion and life. We are getting pumped up for Brie’s birthday (she has her own handmade costume as baby Cleo!) and know we will all look fantastic on her big day.
