Tomorrow is a Chance to Start Over (Hardcover/CD Combo, Ages 3-8)

Bedtime Story and Dream Songs Collection.  Available June 2nd!

Our almost-kindergartener is a huge fan of the 1983 Orange Juice song, Rip it Up and Start Again.  If you don’t know it, I suggest you totally YouTube it, as I’ve heard it so much I don’t think I can get into explaining.  I do love the title and laugh at the lyrics and know that if things aren’t working, sometimes it is best to start over on a new plan.  There is something quite lovely about that, especially at night when you are thinking or ‘ruminating’ as therapists calls it – ha, about things.  Isn’t it better to sometimes say, “I’m going to rip it up and start over tomorrow” as to not drive yourself completely crazy.  Yup, I like that.

My family has loved the book/music combination of the Secret Garden storybooks for many years and were extra excited about the new, Tomorrow is a Chance to Start Over, which is specifically to read/play for bedtime about finding a new quiet place to live to make dreams come true.  While we live in central Austin, Texas which is a pretty congested city, Brooke has spent enough time outdoors in the open to know that big city life is not all this world has to offer.  I tell her of my stories of living close to a National Forest and hiking for miles without seeing a soul and she loves it.  I can’t wait until I can take her back to my stomping grounds in Appalachia so we can wander around outside and do some camping together!

In Tomorrow is a Chance to Start Over, brother and sister team Ira and Isabelle, want to escape their big city’s noise and pollution and go to a faraway land.  While I think about this more often than I’d care to admit (I really miss living in small cities and villages), I think this concept of finding a new and quiet place to live is perfect to lull children to sleep.  In the story, the sibling team are carried away on a sailboat in the darkness and the music that accompanies them is so dreamy that even a cover of Johanne Brahm’s classic “Cradle Song” is used.   The compliation is done by well-known Vancouver singer-songwriter, Hilary Grist, and the smooth and easy listening with the soft illustrations give this heart-warming tale of hope and renewal a rewarding way to end the day.
