Because Time Flies…

The very first day of high school I headed into the ‘dreaded’ English teacher’s room whom everyone said was very SCARY!  We were seated in alphabetical order and I took out some paper and a pencil to start doodling.  That’s when I heard her cackle.  I had never even heard a person make such interesting voices in my life.  Terrified, I followed her with my eyes until she was in the front of the room.

“Hello, class” the crazy cackling lady continued, “let’s get started on your first assignment!”  Really? My heart already sunk since we had already done a ton of summer reading for AP English that I was hoping we would discuss.

I diligently put my pen up to start writing and Ms. Cackle (not her REAL name, of course), said, “Don’t take notes!  You won’t need them.”  I paused.  What are we doing to do?  Gulp.

Then she said;

You are going to write a letter to yourself.  I WILL not read them.  Be as honest as possible.  What I really would like you to write about yourself is HOW do you think you will be different after graduation and what you would like to see yourself become.  Seal the letter in an envelope, address it to your home address and I will mail it out after your Senior year ends.

Sure enough, right after graduation, I received a letter addressed to myself in my own handwriting.  Embarrassed I forget I had done that letter, I thought I may have just addressed it wrong.  Nope!  It was ‘frosh’ Momma telling ‘adult’ (well 18, if that counts..) Momma everything in my life from my first day of high school.  I won’t give deets, but it is something I cherish.  I basically wrote that I was committed to being myself and embracing my unique personality and I was proud that my biggest goal was to always stay true to my weirdness, because that is who I am.  I wrote ideas and goals I set for myself and while I still have my own ‘to do’ list I took the assignment seriously as a way to redirect my intentions and met many of the things I wanted to achieve in high school.  Thank you, Mr. Cackle!

Now let’s take that high school assignment to a whole other level!  While writing in a daily journal (for 10 years, mind you) may seem daunting, it really takes very little time to complete each day.  See video testimonial HERE.
