Tacky Box Set

A book that teaches children how to choose kindness over tacky words and behavior.

Brooke has learned to say, “that’s NOT a nice word” when someone says something TACKY. I love it…and I have been accused of saying tacky things by an almost-kindergartener, too. Yup! Sometimes I say, “That’s crazy!” or “How stupid!” when I think something doesn’t seem right and Brooke is there to tell me to not say it. Of course, I find myself saying the same thing to her when she lets something tacky fly, too. Ha! That is why when I heard about the Tacky Box concept of actually making more of an effort to teach kids to think twice to use words and behavior that is tacky and to be a kinder person in general. And – to be honest – this concept is not just for kids. I have found it to be helpful when I express some less than stellar behaviors that I would want to pass on to my kids.

So how does this whole Tacky Box thing work? Simple Really!

Children get a book on distinguishing appropriate and inappropriate behavior and also learn the intention of being conscious of their words and actions, but to also POLICE them. That’s right! Tacky Box isn’t about the grown-ups coming down on the kids for using words of behaviors that are not kind, this is a system to ENCOURAGE kids to make better choices. The book comes with a box, a little wooden box with the words “TACKY BOX” written on it and encouraged to decorate by your kids – and it comes empty. WHY?

Because your child will write down the exact tacky words and behaviors that they use in order to ‘get them out of their minds and mouths’ and put into the tacky box where they belong. Nice, huh? This is the perfect concept of my almost-kindergartener and one she got right away. You know, she is the ‘nice’ police in our household, after all. So, moving forward to making the connection to a Tacky Box was actually very simple and very encouraging reinforcement for her – and me! I’ve been known to have to drop a few of my own words in the tacky box, much to Brooke’s delight. Oops!
