Xlear (pronounced ‘clear’) is a patented, non-addictive nasal wash designed to aid in the relief of irritation caused by pollutants, allergens and infections of the nasal passages.
It seems that every year after the holidays until the summer months our household is full of sneezes, headaches and coughs. Whatever is in the air in Austin has the kids and my husband feeling sick! Amazingly, I seem to be the only one that does not get as irritated by the allergens or pollutants but that doesn’t make it any less painful. While our oldest is good about wiping her nose and covering her mouth when she coughs, our little one needs all the help she can get with keeping her nose and face free o’ boogers. Ugh! Besides humidifiers, natural cough medicine, vaporizers and wipes, we have added a new natural saline nasal wash made just for kids that is quite effective.
Xlear (you pronounce it ‘clear’) is a non-addictive nasal wash made with the natural substance, Xylitol, to help wash, hydrate and moisturize nasal passages. Why is that important? Nasal passages get irritated by what is in the air – where it is from pollutants, allergens or infections – and the nose begins to produce extra mucus to ‘flush out’ the irritation. If the membranes get dried out (yes, this happens even though your nose is producing extra mucus!) it causes further irritation, so keeping them hydrated with a nasal rinse is important. But what kind of nasal rinse?
What is Xylitol?
Xylitol is extracted from things like fruits and vegetables, corn husks or even hardwood and is a sugar alcohol. It was discovered a few decades ago that Xylitol has low transepithelial permeability, and is poorly metabolized by several bacteria, so it can lower the airway surface liquid salt concentration AKA decrease nasal irritants. Basically, it works in three ways to help clear your nose;
- Decreases the adherence of harmful bacteria to the cells in the nose.
- Stimulates our body’s own defensive washing of the nose.
- Decreases the concentration of salt in the airway surface fluid.
Adding Xlear to our allergen defense has been a very effective method for baby Brie’s runny, stuffy nose. At first she was a little hesitant to let Bob or I spray something inside her nose, but she quickly realized it didn’t hurt and usually giggles after we do each nostril. That certainly makes the application easier! It is amazing that just spraying your nostrils can make a difference to how clean and clear your nose can be and not having a stuffy baby at night is certainly worth the effort.
