A picture book about vehicles and things that go—in this case, bicycles and unicycles!
This title will be released on April 14, 2015.
After finishing up my Economics degree in Athens, Ohio, it was not a huge shock to the system to move to a place like Portland, Oregon. Oh sure, it was a much much larger city than I was used to living (the biggest population where I had lived to date was 14K), but the actual sentiments of Portland felt close to a place like Athens. Most people biked or walked, it wasn’t unusual to grow your own food or know people close by who owned livestock and there was a strong music scene that listened to things like bluegrass. Oh, and don’t get me started on apparel! Let’s just say that besides the congested nature of that city, the RAIN, and my lack of understanding a city bus system; Portland felt very familiar to me. So, why am I talking about a place I haven’t lived for fifteen years? Easy! Greenwillow Books (an imprint of HarperCollins Childrens Books) releases My Bike tomorrow, which is a lovely book perfect for new readers about a joyful bike ride to work.
My Bike is an endearing, bright, and colorful children’s picture book where the illustrations look like they were done straight out of Paint – which I definitely mean in a good way. It talks about Tom, a cheerful and proud owner of a shiny green bicycle that he is riding to his job. The large print, simple words, and fun charts (I love the page that describes all the parts of a bike!) are perfect for small children and it is fun to talk about and describe all the people and scenery that Tom passes. The book gave me a chance to talk to the girls about the difference between a bicycle and a unicycle (and I even threw in explaining a tricycle for added measure) which was great. The surprise ending hints throughout the book including the beginning first pages when we see a truck passing by with the word CIRCUS. The ‘biking to work’ story reminded me of living in Portland, and it was refreshing to read a children’s book that talks about (adult) biking, different professions and the many different types of people from the community and the various ways we use transportation. Definite hit.
New Greenwillow Books are always a treat!
