Oh how I wish I had this book when I was pregnant with baby Brie! My oldest daughter, Brooke, would have gotten a kick out of it then, but now she is probably getting even bigger laughs now as she realizes that she is a little like Gwendolyn Grace even as an almost (*sniff sniff*) kindergartener. See, Gwendolyn Grace is a preschooler (and happens to be an alligator..) who has a new baby sibling, but all GG wants to do it have FUN, which of course means being LOUD to little ones! Her mother is NOT happy that her oldest keeps waking up the baby and poor Gwendolyn can’t seem to follow the rules.
Gwendolyn Grace is funny because, as witness, this is a very realistic and relatable book for little children who have new additions to their families. Why do you have to be quiet just because the baby is sleeping? Gwendolyn is not trying to be naughty, she just wants to have fun and it takes all her mother’s patience to get her oldest to take it down a notch – or ten…. You may recognize the author (Katherine Hannigan) from her bestselling book Ida B. and I have to say that her artistic illustrations are quite bold and hilarious. We all love the ending, especially since Brooke and Brie can actually play together quite well now; because mom, Gwendolyn and baby all get to have fun and be LOUD together. It’s so true that precious moments like that make all the sibling “incidents” worth every single little dramatic episode! Perfect for new big brothers or sisters and any child who finds it hard to follow all those silly adult rules.
