U.S. History Detective® Book 1 focuses on American history from the time of the first European explorers interacting with Native Americans through the Reconstruction Era following the Civil War
American History. If you grew up in the USA, you would hope that the topic of our country’s history would be exciting. If you can analyze our history you can challenge the way you think and approach our future. I grew up in a great area for learning about Native Americans and our Founding Fathers. In fact, SE Ohio in an area that was surveyed by Mr. George Washington himself. Pretty cool, huh? I have always appreciated the ability to make connections in our past to our current affairs and found that studying historical topics actually made me be a better analytical person in general. I look forward to talking about our country’s own history with my kiddos and can’t wait to see how they think about many topics discussed in their textbooks.
U.S. History Detective® is a critical thinking book on American history that has content lesson plans that will challenge students. The information is geared towards middle and high school students and has questions after each chapter and are asked to support their answers. The content of this book focuses on America’s history from roughly the first European explorers in this area to around the Reconstruction Era after the Civil War, so it has a wide variety of topics to cover and many vocabulary lessons for the readers. There is even chapter review activities, essay questions and bonus activities to aid in the student’s learning. I really love all of the images such as the maps and political cartoons that make this book so interesting. I think the importance of learning the difference between history’s opinions and facts is also a great concept for this age group. If you want to develop analytical skills in students in the subject of US History, this is a fantastic lesson plan that is geared to do just that.
In this book, students will:
- Supply supporting evidence for many of their answers
- Supply essay evidence to support their conclusions by drawing on specific information from the lesson
- Draw inferences and conclusions based on their evaluation of the evidence
- Distinguish between facts and opinions
- Analyze historical chronology to see history as a series of interrelated events
- Acquire new vocabulary
- Learn to interpret and draw information from geographical maps, political cartoons, and charts
