You may remember, if you are a longtime reader of my blog, that I used to work for Ecological Services where the mission was to help endangered species. I learned so much while working there and it is amazing how many animals are endangered and on the verge of becoming extinct. African elephants are one such mammal that is killed by more poachers annually than are born. Why? The elephants are being poached to supply illegal ivory to markets around the world. I think it is important that people are aware of such dangers and the need to protect animals that are being killed merely for their tusks. My Peek-A-Zoo creates fun animal graphic designs with educational messages on the back for kids to wear.

- African elephants are the world’s largest terrestrial animals.
- Elephant’s very large ears allow them to radiate excess heat.
- Tusks are large modified incisors that grow throughout an elephant’s lifetime.
- Two subspecies of the African Elephant are recognized; the Forest elephant and the Savanna (or bush) elephant.
- A single calf is born every 2.5-9 years after a gestation period of 22 months. Yikes!
- African elephants mainly eat leaves and branches of bushes and trees, but also eat grasses, fruit, and bark.
- This species can live up to 70 years! Wow.
