My Name is Truth. The Life of Sojourner Truth (Hardcover)
I think with a Name like Sojourner Truth a Body has some Respect at Last
150 years ago this April, the American Civil War ended as did all legal slavery in the United States. Although that was in 1865, many northern states (in areas north of the Ohio River like where I grew up) had outlawed slavery right after the American Revolutionary War between 1777 and 1804. While by 1810, in over 75% of northern states, African-Americans were free citizens, New York’s law (where Sojourner lived) did not officially end slavery until 1827 (yet 38 years before the Civil War ended) and many former northern slaves made a huge contribution and pulled support behind ending slavery from non-free states as free citizens. If you have never read about the story of Sojourner Truth, birth name Isabella Baumfree, I encourage you to learn more. Her life and courage inspired many and through nonviolence and a knack for making fantastic speeches, she was able to transform her life from a former slave to a home-owning Massachusetts resident who was a huge contributor to the civil rights and women’s movement. How inspiring!
In the children’s book, My Name is Truth. The Life of Sojourner Truth, a child is given a wonderful and un-redacted overview of Sojourner’s life as a young child until she was living in a cooperative anti-slavery community in Massachusetts and earning money for her speeches and book sales. Sojourner was a strong, tall woman with a booming voice who was unafraid and wanted to speak her truth to the masses to give her message of freedom and human rights – for all races and genders. Her many years of hardship bring a powerful message to her awesome voice and her brave escape with her young daughter from slavery a year before it became officially illegal in New York is awe-inspiring. Sojourner is an unforgettable person from our history’s past and one that should be encouraged to always remember. Yes, one voice can make a huge impact.
