It is easy to look away when someone is going through a difficult time. But, that is the exact time they need you the most. Are you doing things to raise a compassionate child? What sort of steps should you take?
In a series of books through Harvest Time Partners called The Principles of Our World, it discusses in length different important principles such as courage, compassion and honesty. Supporting and encouraging others does not come naturally, it is a principle that is learned. As teachers to our kids, we need to show them and talk to them about compassion. I thought this book was a great way to talk about this subject in depth with my oldest daughter.
Brooke is in her last few months of pre-school before going to (gasp!) kindergarten and has certainly run into many different social situations at her age. We talk a lot about things happening at school and we’ve had many opportunities to discuss how different peers react and how she reacts and, at times, if things could have gone a different way. Kids have already begun to group each other and talk about each other at that age and I think it is important for her to understand that it is a good thing to care and comfort others even if it isn’t always the most popular response. The great thing about this book is that it gives real world examples of compassion and even has a “Where Do We Go From Here?” section to talk about situations in depth. We all encounter situations in life where we can show compassion and to give children the tools to effectively handle these situations is a wonderful learning gift in their ‘life tool kit’ – to your child and others!
