Red:  A Crayon Story (Hardcover)

“Once upon a time, there was a red crayon that could only draw blue”

It is not often a children’s book gets its own article coverage in the Wall Street Journal, but Red is different.  Why?  Because it is a story of looks not being what they appear in such a simple and obvious way that even small children get the concept.  See, Red is a crayon with a label of ‘red’; however, he is anything but red.  He is actually a BLUE crayon.

BUT – all the other crayons ONLY see the RED label.  Why doesn’t Red mix well with other colors?  Why does his strawberry drawings look so SILLY?!  His parents don’t understand him.  Was there something WRONG with their child?

Of course, my oldest was practically screaming as we read, “He’s BLUE, mom!”  “Yes”  I said patiently, “but no one sees Red for who he is…. they are only looking at the label.”  She huffed.  That is silly.  Yes, yes, it is.

It’s a good thing that Red finally figures out who he is and then everyone realizes his ‘Blue’ potential that goes beyond color.  Looks can be deceiving and labels can be a dangerous thing.  Perhaps you and your child will think twice to look past labels to see things for what they truly are – without judgment – after reading Red.  After all, who wants to be typecast into one or two words when there is so much potential in all of us to carve our own paths.  It’s ok to be different and be true to who you are.

Here’s to No Labels!
