Suz Slezak of David Wax Museum – Debut Solo Album – “Watching the Nighttime Come”
“Wax is the heart of the band, but Slezak is its soul.” — James Reed, The Boston Globe
I am extremely picky about music I review. Why? I’ve gotten so many albums where I enjoy a song or two and the rest I consider ‘throwaway’ songs as if they were just included to fill an album. Not so with Suz Slezak’s debut. First, she is part of David’s Wax Museum and her harmonies and musical talent on multiple instruments pulled me in. As a huge fan of folk and artists like Leonard Cohen and the Magentic Fields, I felt it was my ‘duty’ to test it out. And test I did. I was not disappointed.
First, the David Wax Museum is known as the Newport Music Festival, their touring comes to Austin and Suz is a touring mom who wanted to make a lullaby album for kids and parents ‘who need to chill out’. Ummmm..yes!
Being a mom changes you, it changed me. From the music I played to the music I listened to, I felt more of a deep connection to what I was exposing my kid’s to especially at night. Suz is no exception and her beautiful lullabies to lull children (and adults) to sleepytime is not lost on me. Bravo for her first solo album, especially considering her success with the David Wax Museum. I hope to hear more of her solo albums in the future. We will be listening!
