When people say the word ‘feminism’ it always seemed to come with this negative connotation since I could remember and being a ‘fashionista’ may be seen as a bad thing. But, that is not really what being a feminist is about. Equal opportunities and equal pay for the same job SEEMS like a no brainer for ALL people regardless of gender. Nothing more, nothing less.
So, I, a feminist, am writing about purses and shoes as board books for kids does not make me less of one. In fact, it IS intentional. I do like to look nice. There is NOTHING wrong with that. Pink and glitter are things my children (both girls) gravitate towards and, as a tomboy; I find it cute and amusing, not scary or terrible. I mean, most politicians and actors, no matter the gender, are well groomed, styled, and yes, both genders in many occupations WEAR MAKE-UP. That’s pretty cool that we, as women, can do both. I don’t see that as an issue. I love football and nail polish. I like math and blogging about my family. So what? Until everyone gets on board and realizes we (our family circle) includes all genders working TOGETHER to make all of our lives better and easier in a balance, perhaps we will get there. In the interim, I am going to read and enjoy girly books to my girls. Because, WE ARE GIRLS, and darn it, we like them. If I had boys, I’d read them the same!
Plus, these cool board board are fantastic because they are TOUCH and FREE books which Brie LOVES. She loves the sparkles she loves the glitter and she just loves the books and so do we. So, if they end up like Economists as me or as a fashion designer, it doesn’t matter to me. I just want them to be happy and enjoy the things they love to do. If shoes and purses are part of that, I’ll take them shopping. Or, better yet, my hubby can take them shopping. After all, he picks out all of my clothes since shopping is not my thing. Ha! They are now part of our favorite book collection and I am happy to report that I am happy I gave these adorable books a review because this is what feminism is all about. We can look cute and still not take away from being scientists, mathematicians or even fashion designers. I want the girls to explore it all, and that they do. Awesome books with a fun motor skill activities. Love!
