“We got spirit. Yeah! Yeah! We got spirit. Yeah! Yeah. We got the -what-what-what-what-what? We got spirit!”
Lucinda. She was my friend is third grade and she was a cheerleader. She taught me cheers, how to deep fry corndogs and how to *gasp* shave my legs. Her older sisters were her inspiration and I gleefully followed her lead. If we had not moved to a ‘big’ city of 14K that summer, I imagine I would have become a cheerleader like her. A laughable moment, we got some bass drums and played around our village much to the elderly’s delight. We had no idea how to play, beating on drums as if we were some sort of expert, but it became a lifelong goal where I played drums in a band in high school. I guess I did have the spirit after all!
My school spirit quest led me to become part of our school’s cleanup team where we painted tiger paw prints leading up to my new school (we were the Tigers), join Academic Community Training and be a productive member of society. Whether or not those times with Lucinda helped me realize that school was a place to became one with school spirit, it certainly didn’t hurt. A shy kid who would never dream of causing attention to myself, I certainly did my share of putting myself out there. Her lessons in cheers and dance moves got me started on that path.
As a lifelong fan of college football, I was a huge fan of the BUCKEYES. I grew up in SE Ohio, so we all loved OSU. Now as an Austinite, I love to root for local teams and have gotten interested in the Longhorns. Don’t get me wrong, I probably bleed scarlet and gray, but burnt orange has become my unofficial team. If you can’t beat them, join them! My youngest is a Texan and her spirit is contagious.
Spirit sleeves are not limited to Longhorns, on the contrary, you can find your school spirit with their many, many different colors sizes, socks and much more Spirit Sleeves ‘bling’.
Yup, they even have my beloved OSU team, but I wouldn’t be caught dead at a Longhorn game in it!
I got a chance to talk to owner and creator, Casey Evertsen, who told me more about his Spirit Sleeves. It’s quite an interesting story that started in ELEMENTARY school!
Spirit Sleeves were created in 2009 as a fundraiser for schools that didn’t involve chocolate, cookie dough, wrapping paper or candy bars. I sold the SAME stuff when I was elementary school in the 80’s. Parent groups, teams, youth groups basically any group that needs to raise money can purchase Spirit Sleeves and sell them for a profit! We stock over 100 designs, colors and holiday sleeves.
I was impressed, to say the least. Showing your school colors is not limited to college, elementary or even school functions. Show your SPIRIT anywhere! It’s fun, entertaining and most of all you are joining many of us who love to show our school spirit no matter the team. It certainly beats selling deep fried hotdogs. This memento carries on to parents, teachers, and all those connected to the school. Burnt orange socks have certainly became my favorite color. What is your school spirit?
