I have to laugh a little when people describe that you can always ‘pick yourself up by your bootstraps’ and make it in this world. The people I’m talking about are those that live right here in the United States of America. Looking at poverty as if it were a curse to the underprivileged who do not know how to take care of themselves. As someone who volunteered at an early age in Appalachia, I can tell you that this is not exactly true. There are many things in life that can derail you and poverty IS one of them. Of course I believe people can better themselves and I also believe some people need a little help -for whatever reason – to get there.
Both my parents went to college (one on a Pell grant) and they both graduated and worked as civil servants and volunteers in an economically depressed area. I didn’t learn that we were different, I learned to work hard through their action. I learned to GIVE and to BE THANKFUL for what I had. I don’t need a lot of STUFF, but I do like to be comfortable for myself and my family. Everything else I consider ‘fair game’ and I do tons of donations each year. It was what I WAS TAUGHT.
I’ve seen poverty at its worst in America. Drugs, abuse, hard luck, medical bills….it all adds up. Yet, it’s just not here, there are many, many others worse off and during the holidays I think it is important to find gifts that you would have bought ANYWAY to go to a charity. Like, a real CHARITY.
