GoldieBlox and the Dunk Tank (Ages 4-9)

At GoldieBlox, our Goal is to Get Girls Building!
I watched the last Super Bowl, not because I particularly cared who won (I root for Ohio team, so you can imagine my usual disappointment) and I saw this awesome commercial. Little girls running away from their ‘girly girl’ toys and to a new world where they are engineers. I made a mental note to check it out sometime down the line.

I’ve been doing my children’s empowerment blog for a few years and focus on girls since I have two! I do a lot of book reviews and loved the idea on having a book series built behind engineering. I went to college to be an Economist, which is notoriously not a female’s profession and I have written about how I was almost always the only girl in my upper level classes! I was until just weeks ago the only working parent and my husband was a stay at home dad for four years, so I am always trying to teach the girls about women empowerment. I love the idea behind this brand and I was excited to do this review with Brooke, my preschooler. Oh yes, it was awesome!

I also loved the story behind GoldieBlox. It was designed and created by a female engineer, who like me, saw that this was another field where women in the United States only make up 15% of engineers in the United States. Shocking? Yes! Especially because girls have been excelling at math and science for decades. But what else is shocking? That even in my upper Econ classes, I only had one female professor and had one older male professor tell me ‘women do not do well in the field of economics.’ Ha! What can you say to that? I mean, it’s just NOT TRUE, but it is hard to change minds without doing the legwork. So, I am building up my girls much in the same way that GoldieBlox builds designs. One step at a time!

In the book, GoldieBlox and the Dunk Tank, Goldie has to get her dog Nacho clean before her and her friends can go to the carnival. Nacho HATES baths. So what does Goldie do? Make a DUNK TANK, of course! As you and your child read along, you help Goldie build a dunk tank (and learn about hinges and levers) to get Nacho clean so everyone can go to the carnival on time. Nice!
