Maddi’s Fridge (Hardcover)

“Why doesn’t your mom go the grocery store?” Sofia asked.  “We don’t have any money.”

This book about childhood hunger hits close to home.  As I’ve mentioned a thousand times, I’m from Appalachia and it was a pretty common occurrence to go to a friend’s house who had very little food.  I remember making a meal with a friend of mine after school with just hamburger and bread.  It was all she had.  We drank tap water.  Then found enough change to get a cookie for a quarter at a local corner shop.  It didn’t really DAWN on me that people were poor.  That’s just how it was…

If you go to many places in our country, you will find childhood hunger.  It’s not just limited to Appalachia.  For many reasons, children go hungry.  It’s sad, it’s terrible but there are things you can do about it.  For example, I used to volunteer at my local food bank.  I still donate food and toys to kids.  It’s something I like to do.  It’s something that I think is important.

Maddi’s Fridge is about Maddi’s bare fridge and how childhood hunger exists everywhere.  If you are a fortunate family, this is a great book to teach children about struggles and empathy for kids their own age who may not get frequent meals.  I LOVE that this is geared towards ages 4-8, which was PERFECT for my preschooler.   We touch on the subject of charity and fortune and the importance of empathy and volunteerism.  Because if those who have do not share with the have nots, what is the purpose of life?  Children who do not ask to be brought into the world into extreme situations need help and it costs very little time and money to make a real difference right in your own community…and beyond!
