Koodle Kids Ultrasound Art From the Heart
Create your Ultrasound Art
Ultrasounds. All new parents are excited to see their babies growing within the womb. I had a different feeling about them after my miscarriage. I saw my baby, on the ultrasound screen, fully formed and sleeping peacefully. Only she wasn’t sleeping. So, when I found out I was pregnant with my youngest, I didn’t want to see them. I didn’t want to feel that hurt and attachment if she didn’t make it. But, then something happened –
My pregnancy was high risk and I had to go to Maternal Fetal Medicine every week where I got to see ultrasound pictures of Brie from week 24 and on until she was born slightly early at exactly 38 weeks. It took bed rest and telework, as well as following a diabetic lifestyle (I learned I had gestational diabetes – which I never had with my first two pregnancies) to make sure I didn’t lose her. Those pictures became my loving goal to bring this child into the world. And, I did!
I spoke to Karen, the creator, via e-mails on what makes the best canvass ultrasounds and I was surprised by her answer. She said that the ultrasounds canvasses turn out well at any trimester. In the earlier ones, you can see the whole baby and the later ones, just the face. She said that some people have one done at each stage to tell a story! Awesome. She did mention that 18 weeks is usually a great ultrasound picture to capture on artwork.
Karen’s artwork is then sent out to professional canvas printers and can ship throughout the world! The canvases designs are a great quality and are a perfect addition to our little Brie’s room. My pregnancy was so difficult but seeing this wonderful design makes it all worth it. Brie is, after all, the coolest baby in the world (says her Momma!) Keepsakes like Karen’s ultrasound canvasses are a wonderful reminder of the preciousness of human life and the fact that everything we went through together as a family, as difficult as it was emotionally and physically, we have a perfect happy baby with us now. Wonderful.

Q&A with creator Karen:
- What made you decide to start doing ultrasound art for parents?
My son, who is a graphic designer, created the first ultrasound art for his sister who was pregnant a couple of years ago. Everybody loved it, and as he was a student at the time, he created Koodle Kids and I did all the admin work. Since then, he has moved on in his career. He taught me how to do the ultrasound art (which was a huge learning curve for me) and I absolutely love creating every single piece of art.
- What is your favorite ultrasound design so far?
They are all lovely, but I think my absolute favorite was one that was ordered by a husband for his wife. The verse he wrote was amazing, and I shed a tear when I read it. Other special ones are these with babies’ sucking their thumbs – my son was doing that in one of his ultrasound pics, so they bring back so many memories! I loved one where all you could see were the soles of the feet – so cute. I have done quite a few canvases using the heartbeats, which turn out beautifully.
- Tell my readers some more about yourself. Do you have kiddos?
I have 2 children, a boy and a girl, who are now in their late twenties. I have one little 2 year old granddaughter who keeps us on our toes – she is beautiful!
I love outdoor sports, and spend a lot of my time on a surf ski, playing tennis and walking.
- What other artistic endeavors do you create?
I love painting and have recently completed a photography course. Since I learned how to use Photoshop, I am slowly going through all our old photos, restoring them and creating photobooks as keepsakes. It’s a never-ending process, but always worth the effort!
