Let The Holiday Season Shine!

As a working mom, I do feel a constant struggle between wanting to be there for my kids and making money for our family. Yes, that is HOW I see work now. As you may have gathered through my posts, I used to be a workaholic and easily followed in my father’s ‘work then play’ attitude in life. Then I realized that my dad never really learned to play. When I had my first child a few days after turning 31, it was like a light switch went on. I don’t know if it was having a preemie and dealing with the NICU and seeing a precious life struggle that for the first time – I thought more about my family than work. Bob was going through his own turmoil of a layoff and not ever fully recovering financially and I made the leap to a job and grade series where Bob could temporarily be a stay at home dad. Four years later…..

I still struggle to be the best mom and employee and it SUCKS. It’s hard to do both.

This time around, post miscarriage (which happened to happen a week before Christmas a few years ago) and work struggles, I had Brie. I wanted more time. Unlike most countries, American women don’t have as much bonding time due to needing to be in the workforce. Six weeks with Brooke was not enough, could I stretch my leave that I had built up until I was ready to return? Nope. I wasn’t ready. And, I missed out on one of our traditions during this huge transition for me…..a family Christmas picture card.

Oh, I got out a card with pictures of the girls, Brie just weeks old with major colic, Brooke annoyed to sit still and Bob and I so wiped out we didn’t even try to get one all together as a family. A first in half a decade!

I had the outfits, the date for the picture set and how we would get cheap copies made into cards and then it fizzled. WE WERE EXHAUSTED.

I’m not doing that again this year! In fact, I already have a plan in how I want to do our holiday card. Have you seen the website Minted? If not, check out their great selection of holiday picture cards for a personalized feel here.

It’s never too early to plan for a wonderful and inexpensive YET highly personalized card. I love going back over the years to see how our family has changed.

After all, we “Bacons” make an adorable family! It’s important for me to share that with my family who mostly live very far away. Thank goodness for sites like Minted that give our cards a quality look for a great price – and how professional pictures can be awesome (and you can use for your card – a SELFIE photo of us and the girls means just as much to the grandparents. I will keep up this tradition as long as possible and never again make an excuse for not doing one. Thanks, Minted, for making it easier!
