The story of Elmer the patchwork elephant has been around for 25 years! However, it was new to me! See, I was 10 when this book came out and by that time I was reading books by Daniel Keyes, history and biographies. I felt children’s books were no longer in my age range. But, Elmer is different.
Why?
Elmer is different. He doesn’t look like all the other elephants, but they all loved him. He, however, wanted to blend in. Doesn’t that sound familiar? I won’t give away the entire story, but Elmer learns that his uniquness is what makes him who he is and people (ahem, elephants) love him for it. It’s a great book for young kids to know that being different is not only OK, it’s IMPORTANT to be yourself. Awesome read!
