RAGS, Hero Dog of WWI: A True Story (Hardcover, Ages 6-10)

In Memory of Those Who Serviced on the 100th Anniversary of the Beginning of WWI

I have probably proclaimed my love of history on many occasions. I think it just comes from that driving desire to understand. Downton Abbey got me hooked on learning the brutality of WWI and just how terrible warfare could be *cue scary trenches scene* Oh man, how terrible.

However, even in the darkest of times, there can be good. Take for instance RAGS.

Did you know that there is a DOG whose tombstone reads: RAGS, War Hero, 1st Division Mascot WWI, 1916-1936? There is! Just go to the Aspen Hill Park in Silver Spring Maryland. It’s there!

RAGS’s owner, Donovan, found RAGS on the streets of France during WWI. Donovan was an American soldier who adopted little RAGS. RAGS became his companion and ‘unofficial’ mascot to the troops.

I will say, the book deals with death (Donovon did not make it), but RAGS did, and came out to live out the rest of his life in Washington D.C. to be close to his owner’s side.
