The People and Technology That Changed the World
Did you know that my maiden name actually has it’s own family lineage motto called ‘Industria Ditat’? It means INDUSTRY ENRICHES.
Do you want to INSPIRE your child to CHANGE the world? Wow! What a cool concept. But there are so many people – ordinary people like you and me- that have made a huge mark in history and you will never find their name in a history book. And….that’s ok! Most people do not set out to change the world in a big way, but through hard work, intelligence and lots of patience, things can change…for the better.
So, what has been one of the biggest events that changed the world in our history? The Industrial Revolution, of course! So, let’s learn about it!
What is the Industrial Revolution?
The Industrial Revolution was when our world started to change to new manufacturing processes in the period from about 1760 to sometime between 1820 and 1840. Think production lines, new chemical manufacturing, water power efficiency, machine tools, coal and, of course, the very dominant textile industry here in the United States. Production lines and other modern methods flooded our country and others as the Industrial Revolution became an avalanche of inventions, ideas and the oversight to try and make it all work. It was an explosive time. It was an interesting time. It wasn’t just an American phenomena, it was countries competing to become first world nations. It also became what we now know as the prosperity of America.
Sure you have heard of the Rockefellers and the Carnegies (and their famous factories), but what about Hannah Montague or Jacob Riis? No? Well, now you can read all about the lesser known people who helped the Industrial Revolution in America. This is a very impressive and interesting read for kids and their grown-ups!
Activities! This book includes twenty-one hands-on activities such as helping kids learn to experience life during this period by preparing gruel, designing a product for the World’s Fair, or creating a floor plan of a tenement apartment. Additional resources include books to read, places to visit, and websites to explore.
