More Multicultural Children’s Songs from Ella Jenkins (CD, All Ages)
Smithsonian Folkways distills the genius of America’s ‘First Lady of Children’s Music’s 40th title
Music could always transport me through time and space. Sounds like “Alouette” or “Waltzing Matilda” made me interested to learn more about language and culture. That is the beautiful thing about music from Folk artists like the legendary Ella Jenkins, they realize Folk is similar all around the world. The more we understand and learn about Folk, the more we grow and understand and pass on fantastic history from all over.
If you do not know about Ella Jenkins, she has quite a reputable catalog of music. Let me try to break it down to some highlights you should know about this amazing singer/songwriter for kids:
- She has been dubbed ‘The First Lady of Children’s Music’ by her fans
- She turned 90 years old on August 6, 2014!
- She has worked with Smithsonian Folkways for more than 56 YEARS
- This album marks her 35 album for Smithsonian Folkways
- Her albums reflect a wonderful cohesion between music and learning

About Smithsonian Folkways Recordings: Smithsonian Folkways Recordings is the nonprofit record label of the Smithsonian Institution. Folkways Recordings was started by Moses Asch (1905-1986) so that he could record what he called the ‘people’s music’ from around the world. Under Asch’s direction, he created one of the most influential record labels in the world that included recordings from Guthrie, Pete Seeger and Lead Belly. Amazing! The Smithsonian acquired Folkways in 1987 from the Asch estate and has continued to ensure Asch’s amazing collection continues for future generations.
