We ALL know it is important to stay clean and germ-free when you are in a school setting. These are things kids do not always think about or know WHY it is important. Let me tell you a personal story to get the ball rolling….
When I was a freshmen in high school my brother had a very close friend, Andy, who was also (by extension) my friend. See, my brother and I are only 18 months apart in age and was a year apart in school. We shared many of the same friends. So, Andy was mine. We played computer games, made up songs and generally just had good teenage fun. He was a good kid.
One day Andy got sick. We thought it was the flu. It wasn’t. It was bacterial meningitis. Unfortunately, the diagnosis came too late and he passed away at the young age of 16. The prime of his life. It was…shocking, scary….but the worst……we all could have caught it.
I was especially vulnerable since Andy and I were friends and didn’t think twice about sharing food and drinks. We had shared a sucker he was selling for band the week before. I had to take medication and go see a counselor with my brother through Children’s Services who tried to contain the situation at our high school. Everyone was freaked out. No one else caught it or at least they didn’t get sick from it.
Yes, this is an extreme situation. BUT IT HAPPENED. To my brother’s good friend. Germs are all around us, some good and some bad. So how do we tell our kids to stay safe and clean while still allowing them to be KIDS. I didn’t become a germ freak from that terrible tragedy, but I don’t share food and drinks anymore! However, I love products that help explain to kids why it is important to stay sanitary.
