I love this book.  Let’s get that out of the way!  This story is about five carpenter ants who are digging tunnels underground that gives them a small peek into the world outside their below ground home.  One of the ants is CONVINCED that in one of his tiny peepholes into the outside world there is a VERY scary orange aardvark!  Does he exist?  He sounds terrifying!

It may seem silly to us that these little ants think there is a horrible monster of an aardvark outside of the safety of their underground tunnel home, but it is actually quite a keen observation of life.  We are scared of the unknown and if we didn’t know any better, why wouldn’t we imagine an orange aardvark(?).  Much to the ants surprise, after much concern, worry and more hole drilling, they discovered it isn’t an aardvark at all, but something much more beautiful and amazing in nature.  The ‘drilled’ holes made by the ants dot the pages making an even more fun read for a preschooler!  This is a repeat in our house!
