Custom Cakes, Sweets and Treats!

I’m not exactly quite sure how this all happened although I imagine it has something to do with my ummm…little control issue of wanting to plan everything.  Apparently I need an intervention because this is how you end up planning your first child’s first six birthday party themes before they are even born.  Yes, you read that correctly.  You can re-read.  Bob and I had planned out Brooke’s first six birthday party themes in one swoop without much thought or consequence, in an act of -I assume- ignorance and defiance, while we were pregnant for the first time and we keep going like the novices we are…….

So, what are these six themes we came up with for Brooke you are probably wondering?  Easy.  The Six Flags Over Texas.  See, apparently, the theme park is not just a clever name; the state of Texas has had six different Texas flags in its history.  Now, I’m a Yankee so when I first heard this idea (while probably sick and bloated in my second trimester) I thought, “Great! I don’t have to think about a birthday theme for seven years! Let’s do this!”, but it got oh so much more complicated than that and some of it involves cakes.

Cakes?  Yes!  Cakes have become a central theme to our parties and let’s just file it under the category of ‘First Time Parent Trying Too Hard’, we decided we could do a different hat-shaped themed cake for each year, too!  Sure!  Why not?!  Yeah, because that sounds reasonable.  Yet, it stuck!

Brooke’s first birthday party, which I had to throw together in one night after traveling back home from work travel the night before, had quite a interesting homemade cowboy hat cake.  With melted fondant and frosting that bled down the side of her bright pink hat as we sang “Happy Birthday”, I swore that I would never work with fondant again.  I still don’t know if anyone ate it except Brooke.  I was sweating from the last minute frosting dabs to notice.

NO MORE!  No More Baking Birthday Cakes if we are continuing this tradition!  I’m contracting it out!  And I did.  Best birthday tip ever!

Brooke First Birthday  Sure, it sort of looked like a cowboy hat for Brooke’s first birthday (theme: Texas flag, Cowboy Hat Cake), but the misery in putting together this cake myself outweighed my ‘do-it-yourself’ attitude.

So I happened to have found Corrie Ruppel (Something Yummy Co.) sort of by accident through a random conversation with a momma and I found Corrie and her wonderful (key-local) cake making skills.  She has made my birthday parties so much better and no stress that I almost don’t want to review her because I don’t want her to get too popular or expensive for me.  Yup, she’s good, fun to work with and she is reasonably priced.  I love working with cool and inventive people and Corrie is a genius.  She has also rolled with our crazy themes (which has now spanned into her doing any big party theme we do – like Bob’s recent graduation) over the years, including our newest start to the long spanning birthday theme with Baby Brie; Ancient Wonders of the World.  Nope, we haven’t learned.  Sorry, Corrie, you are stuck with us for at least another seven years!

Brooke Second Birthday  Brooke’s Second Birthday Cake was done by Corrie (theme: Mexico Flag, Sombrero Cake) and I have never looked back.  I have since added her homemade cupcakes to our orders, too!

Bob Graduation Cake  I told Corrie to roll with Bob’s foodie interest for his graduation cap cake and make an interesting cake flavor.  Bob was so super impressed and loved that she even used cayenne in it.  Wow!

Note to Locals!  Corrie serves the greater Austin area (think north-side; Round Rock, Leander, Pflugerville, etc.) and will even do delivery for a small delivery charge.

About Corrie (Psst!  She told me she ‘couldn’t write’, but I reminded her that neither could I, so I did no edits!):

I grew up in south Florida watching and helping my mother cook and bake all kinds of neat things from her Bon Apetite Magazine. After graduating college with a BS in Information Systems, I went to work at IBM for 7 years and was part of the 2008 resource action. I took some cake decorating classes and started combining my love for baking and art into cakes and cookies. Soon after, family and friends began asking for my cakes, and Something Yummy was born! I love all the unique challenges my customers give me. I also love the fact that I can do something I love while staying home with my kids.
