I recently wrote a very personal blog post that included a story about how I had been stalked as a teenager – then I promptly deleted it. I think it was really cathartic to write about the experience and although I am glad I shared, it was the writing process that helped the most and I didn’t really feel like having it up anymore. But one thing that I felt I finally was able to express was the entire feeling about the experience looking back as an adult. At the time, being stalked was numbing, it was scary and I felt pretty darn helpless. I do not want to live my life in fear and do not wish that feeling upon anyone else – yet we have a real problem in our world when it comes to safety and women and I am not sure how we can stop it on a global scale.
The National Crime Victimization reported that over 600 women in one day are raped or sexually assaulted.
Think about that. I mean really think about it. I know, I’ve dealt with statistics since my undergrad and you do get numb to the numbers. But, we should not be numb to violence against others.
The Importance of Self Protection
Yes, this product is cute and a little tongue-in-cheek, but to have a desire to make a safety product for women that is also a cool accessory is actually a really great idea. Designer pepper sprays was such an interesting idea that I had to check it out as soon as I heard about it.
What is Pepper Spray?
Pepper spray is an aerosol spray that contains the oils of a chemical compound that irritates the eyes and is a common tool in law enforcement and can be used in personal self-defense. Pepper spray is essentially made up of the same stuff as hot sauce! The main ingredient is Oleoresin Capsaicin (OC) which is the active component of a chili pepper. Why is that important? Because pepper spray is ranked in its effectiveness by the % of OC in the ingredients (the higher the %, the stronger the spray), so check the labels.
How Effective is Pepper Spray?
The chemical compound is not lethal although since the inflammatory effects to the eyes cause temporary blindness it permits those using pepper spray an opportunity to escape. Pepper spray only takes 3-5 seconds to work and can last up to 60 minutes depending on effectiveness (so check those labels for the OC%!)
Learn Self-Defense!
Just having pepper spray is not enough to be in control of your own personal self-defense, it is also important to get some training and practice with your specific spray. There are a lot of great guidebooks out there, like the Tactical Use of Defensive Sprays for learning to help assist you in self-defense techniques. Oh, and since there are many laws and regulations regarding pepper spray that may be specific to your area, be sure to brush up on the legalities of this issue if you plan to carry it.
