A New Instrument for a New Generation
I am really digging this new wave of portable instruments. I was excited to see that HOHNER, who invented the melodica decades ago, recently came out with an updated version called the Airboard. If you are not familiar with a melodica, let me explain.
A melodica is a portable free-reed instrument with a keyboard to control the sound that was created by HOHNER in the 1950s. They are a great tool for music education and are known for their light and portable style. Melodicas can be made of either wood or plastic and come in a variety of ranges and shapes. It has been used in many different styles of music, from jazz to pop.
The reason the melodica is great for even early music education is because, despite being a woodwind instrument, the sound is controlled by the keyboard and one note can be played with just a finger (which is not the case with most woodwind instruments.) The melodica continues to be a very popular instrument for education in Asia.
Does this look familiar? It’s a melodica!
HOHNER has brought the melodica into the 21st century with their new AirBoard.
This easy-to-learn AirBoard instrument looks a lot like the melodica but with many updated new features. One striking difference is something that HOHNER calls the BlowFlow™ mouthpiece. This new mouthpiece design is made to be ergonomic and allow an easier air flow. The AirBoard can be purchased in a 32 or 37-key variety and comes with a nice portable bag to carry. The bag is really cute and was adjustable so it could fit Brooke’s shoulders perfectly. The instrument is now available through most music retailers as well as Amazon.com.
This is a great instrument for kids and parents! It is so simple for even our preschooler to play which is awesome. It has no power source, it is portable and really simple to play as well as creating a unique sound for musicians and budding musicians. That is music to our ears!
Airboard App! Have an iPhone or Android? Hohner has an app available here available to purchase to be able to ‘play’ the Airboard electronically on your phone. Fun!
