Pay attention

Pay Attention, Emily Brown! (Hardcover, Pre-K+)

If I hung upside down by an arm and a knee, do you think, Emmy Brown, you would listen to me?

Anyone who knows me knows I have trouble paying attention. Bob likes to laugh (…get annoyed by, whatever?!) about watching a TV show with me. I get up and walk out of the room at length and he is the one that ends up being like a ‘Reader’s Digest’ for me when he explains the entire show back. I don’t mean to make him my own personal TV narrator; I just do not have a long attention span for most things. It can drive people batty and it certainly isn’t fun for me especially when I try and control it since it is a huge part of who I am.

I think that is why I not only sympathize that my older daughter has trouble focusing; it also plays on my impatience since we tend to find similar things ‘boring’. I have learned tips and tricks to help me with focus over the years and have done things like incorporate yoga into Brooke’s life since she was little. It is not a perfect system and I am always looking out for tools to help her – and me – be better at creating distraction free zones. Pay Attention, Emily Brown! is a fantastic book for parents with kids who need a little encouragement in the focus department!

Pay Attention, Emily Brown! is quite a funny and enjoyable book about a parent trying and wondering what is capturing the attention of her daughter, Emily.  It’s a great way to talk to your child about the importance of staying focused when someone is talking to you while still understanding that sometimes we have one of those days, or moments in time that make it difficult to pay attention.  Brooke and I both got some laughs from this story and the pictures are hilarious!  While Woodbine House books focus on providing books regarding children with special needs (in this case ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, or sensory processing disorder), attention issues and focus techniques are great information and tools for everyone.

Did you know? Adult attention spans are averaged 45 to 90 minutes per task. Yes, even adult brains need natural limits and breaks. Schedule time in your day for daily mental breaks and why not take a short walk in between projects to avoid ‘monkey mind’!
